Dancing in the Dark

This is the story of an exceptional two-year journey through every country in Latin America. Memorable sections from the writing include a visit to a family living in a three story home constructed entirely out of garbage in Brazil’s largest favela, participating in one of the world’s most exotic festivals on an isolated island in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest, and an expedition to a secret Mecca of Venezuelan black magic, as well as a run in with a manic-depressive lucha libre wrestler in Mexico and a citywide riot in Guatemala. I also spent time with a group of local squatters protesting against treatment of banana plantation workers in Nicaragua, and cycled more than 800 miles through Cuba, hitting many small towns and nearly every major urban center on the way. Extensively researched appendices are also included at the end of the book, discussing Latin America politics, history, sexuality, and economics.

After that, I cycled more than 1,200 kilometers through the island of Cuba, hitting many small towns and nearly every major urban centre on the way. Due to my appearance and the fact I speak fluent Spanish, I was often mistaken for a local, receiving unique insight into the otherwise tourist-segregated lives of the people. After doing a homestay with a family of Havana journalists and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, I toured the entire island on two wheels.

Extensively researched appendices are also included at the end of the book, discussing Latin America politics, history,  body language, sexuality, and economics.
